ARTIST BIO

Tyler Goliday is an artist from Starkville, Mississippi, known for his portraits in acrylic paint. His mastery of grisaille brings his subjects to the forefront, commanding attention against the vibrantly colored or intricately patterned backgrounds that define his pieces. Goliday’s talent has been recognized in several prestigious venues. His debut was marked by his participation in the Municipal Art Gallery's (Re)mediation show, in Jackson, Mississippi. Further establishing his place in the art community, Goliday's work was featured on the cover of Jackson State University’s Journal of Art and Theatre, and he has also been a notable participant in The Mashup, a platform for young, Black creatives in Mississippi. Additionally, his art was selected for exhibition at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, showcasing his growing influence and the broad appeal of his work. His first solo exhibition was held at the Municipal Art Gallery in Jackson, Mississippi on the month of May of 2024.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Goliday’s art is an exploration of identity, drawing on a wealth of personal and collective experiences. At the core is an exploration of trauma, resilience, and the Black experience in the contemporary landscape. His utilization of monochromatic figures acts as a bridge, connecting viewers with the nuanced struggles and achievements of African Americans, particularly those navigating the realities of poverty and systemic adversity. The stark contrasts in his paintings are intentional, echoing the harsh realities and the profound beauty of life within marginalized communities. Goliday’s process is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability, incorporating elements from his personal history, literature, music, and the rich heritage of African American culture into a compelling visual language.
